Harsh Times

You should watch Timbuktu very soon after watching Beasts of No Nation to cleanse yourself of this [bad] movie and really appreciate the genre. Idris Elba is the film’s high point and that’s saying something because he’s just doing a mediocre imitation of Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland. The ultra-graphic and explicit nature of the violence in Beasts of No Nation actually works against the film, as the tension drastically dissolves in the second act, resulting in a dreary, monotonous tone, particularly since we’ve seen these themes, of the novice militant’s rude awakening and disillusionment, handled with so much more artfulness and subtlety in other movies.
