Costume designer Colleen Atwood shines in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, a sequel/prequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman. The story is the cast: Charlize Theron, garbed in a dazzling gown, reprises her role as a malicious blond ruler/temptress; under a beautiful braided white wig, Emily Blunt plays her sister, humble and sweet until a betrayal turns her into an ice queen, adorned in bondage rings; Jessica Chastain plays a skilled archer who falls for the titular huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). The action idea is find the magic mirror and return it to Snow White (who is not in the movie). Whether taken from Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, most of the movie’s elements will feel familiar. Although the fisticuffs are well-executed, the larger action sequences aren’t filmed in an interesting way, edited with only a modicum of coherence. The dwarfs are the sideshow amusement, the visuals are eye-catching.
