In Jake Szymanski’s mindlessly hilarious Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Zac Efron plays Mike, an artsy bro, and Adam Devine plays Dave, an excitable bro. Their mission is not to wreck their sister’s Hawaii wedding as they’ve wrecked all the family ceremonies in the past when they’ve gone stag; their past failures are showcased in a funny PowerPoint set to Ke$ha. Mike and Dave enlist Craigslist to find “nice” girls for wedding dates. Finding out about the opportunity, Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), out-of-work party girls, trick the boys into believing they’re “nice” and are chosen to tag-along to Hawaii. A lot of the jokes in the first act fall flat, like when Alice lies about being a hedge fund manager, saying, “Our fund, we hedge it, we hedge it hard.” But when the movie changes setting, to Hawaii, the jokes start to land as the humor gets raunchier and more physical. Aubrey Plaza and Adam Devine dominate the movie. Devine’s squealing freak-outs and the contortions of his face, sometimes zoomed-in on for comic effect, are delightful while Aubrey Plaza’s dead-eyed delivery, confident cruelty, and even her verbal wit make her a standout. But if you’re turned off by sentimental stories, flagrant swearing, or obscenity in general, this may not be the comedy for you.
