Sex is the meaning of life in Sausage Party, a crudely funny and forgettable animated comedy about talking food. The hero of the story is a sausage, aptly named Frank (voiced by Seth Rogen), whose mission is to get inside a bun named Brenda (Kristen Wiig). The villain, and best character, is a Douche on steroids (Nick Kroll). Sausage Party draws its humor from three strands. First from ethnic jokes: Bagel, who sounds like Woody Allen (voiced by Edward Norton), is at odds with an Arabic-sounding Lavash (David Krumholtz). Second from pastiche: the funniest scene in the movie imitates a war scene, e.g. Saving Private Ryan. Third from its skewering of religion: in the world of Sausage Party the opiate of the masses is a fantastical idea that once the food is bought it will go to Paradise, instead of people’s stomachs. The rest is sex jokes.
