The comedy stylings of stand-up superstar Kevin Hart are on display in Kevin Hart: What Now? Only one of us was a fan of Hart, in stand-up and film, and she found this movie par for the course. The other one of us, who has not responded to Hart in films, nor watched his stand-up, found this film achingly funny: he laughed till tears rolled down his face, till he shook in his chair, till he could no longer breathe. What Now? is framed by a silly James Bond parody-pastiche that ropes in Halle Berry and Don Cheadle. Its meat, though, is Hart’s performance at Citizens Bank Park, in Philadelphia. Hart shines when his humor is unsparing, especially with regard to his bourgeois family; when he’s upfront about his selfishness; and when he is unashamedly self-deprecating. True, it’s annoying that he has to repeat each joke’s setup three times, and do we really need another Starbucks bit? Maybe not. But we do want more stand-up specials like this one.
